Historic Wilkinsburg train station may be brought back to life

Posted on April 22, 2016 by marlee

April 22, 2016: The long-vacant Wilkinsburg train station may get a new owner and purpose.

The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation wants to acquire the historic station, which was built in 1916 and has fallen into disrepair, “to ensure that the building’s future is civic and serves a community purpose that is self-sustaining and public in nature,” said Marlee Gallagher, spokesperson for the corporation.

Plans for the Hay Street station have not been finalized, but in keeping with the nature of the space and its location on the East Busway, she said, the corporation envisions it as a “transit-oriented civic space that includes amenities such as a cafe, restaurant, post office, bicycle and Port Authority ConnectCard kiosks and other resources that would benefit residents, business owners, visitors and commuters.” Read the full article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
