Our organization was formed in 2008 to foster positive community and economic development in Wilkinsburg Borough.
Over the past decade, we have championed efforts to stabilize and transform the community in partnership with Wilkinsburg officials and other local, regional, and state agencies dedicated to strengthening Wilkinsburg.
WCDC Key Accomplishments
Since opening our office in 2010:
Wilkinsburg Commercial Development Projects
➢ Successfully completed $7.5 million historic restoration of the Wilkinsburg Train Station.
➢ Opened the Historic Lohr Building following a $3 million renovation.
➢ Stabilization and restoration of the Wilkinsburg Bank Building for mixed-use housing and retail.
Small Business and Entrepreneurial Support
➢ 50 grant awards totaling $225,000 have been provided to Wilkinsburg businesses.
➢ 200 entrepreneurs have graduated from our Core-Four Business Planning
Workshops.
➢ 10 startup businesses have received $60,000 in rental assistance.
➢ 60 Wilkinsburg small businesses and organizations have been promoted
through the WCDC E- Blast, Sun Newsletter, videos and our social media
channels.
Strong Neighborhoods Initiative
Since launching the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative in 2021, we have raised $2
million to tackle blight and vacancy issues specific to each of Wilkinsburg’s
unique communities.
➢ 40 Wilkinsburg homeowners have received home repairs of up to $15,000.
➢ 31 Vacant Property Recovery Program (VPRP) applications have been
filed on behalf of Wilkinsburg residents.
➢ Three neighborhood groups received $160,000 to tackle blight and
abandoned property.
Planning and Advocacy
The WCDC has conducted 35 studies and reports, including:
➢ Wilkinsburg and the City of Pittsburgh Municipal Merger Impact Studies
and Financial Analysis.
➢ Wilkinsburg School District Analysis which resulted in the 7-12th
grade partnership between Wilkinsburg and the Pittsburgh School
Districts.
➢ Completed two successful 5-year Main Street plans, along with
market analysis, parking, transportation plans and business district
design and branding community engagement studies.
➢ Organized community grassroots engagement in a state-wide lobbying
effort to double the Neighborhood Assistance Program, increasing the
available tax credits from $36 million to $72 million.
The WCDC has provided over $120,000 in support to 30 organizations, reaching more than 3,000 youths who participate in local summer and after school programs in Wilkinsburg.
Since 2020, Art All Over has hosted 22 Wilkinsburg artists and welcomed over
1,250 visitors to the Lohr Gallery.
We have generated over 300 positive press articles about Wilkinsburg and
hosted thousands of residents and visitors at our street festivals, vacant house
tours, home and garden tours, and other community events.
