February 16, 2015: Wilkinsburg has been a dry borough for all but two years since 1870, but the past 40 have been particularly sobering. With half its heyday population of 31,000 and about 800 vacant buildings — a rate of 19 percent — the borough has welcomed a handful of partners in recent years to stop the bleeding. Now it hopes to wet its whistle. The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corp. and 40 volunteers aim to collect the required 1,059 signatures on a petition by March 10 to get a liquor license referendum on the May 19 primary ballot.
