The established mission and purpose of the Park Triangle committee is to:
Continue partnership with the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation Strong Neighborhoods Initiative to “Build strong neighborhoods through an investigation of the causes and impacts of blight and vacancy in Wilkinsburg.” As well as continue the 2021 Community Conversations by engaging neighbors in:
- Crucial conversations
- Developing revitalization projects related to vacant properties in and around the Park Triangle Neighborhood
- Decision making regarding vital issues and concerns for the neighborhood.
On March 4, 2023 Park Triangle hosted a kick-off meeting at Covenant Fellowship Church. Approximately 50 people attended to discuss concerns and desires for neighborhood improvement.
The following priority goals were established during this meeting:
- Advocacy – Be a voice.
- Sustainable Housing
- Environmental issues and safety
- Infrastructure
- Vacant lots
Throughout the 2023 calendar year Park Triangle has been successful with honing on several of these priorities by hosting approximately 5-7 community events which included follow up planning meetings, a garden event, community clean up events, brown bag lunch giveaways. We have also collaborated with local organizations such as Covenant Fellowship Church, REDD up Wilkinsburg, Rising Tide, Upstream.
Park Triangle Priorities
The focus area on Swissvale Ave between Wallace Avenue and Park in addition to the extending side streets. Therefore, we refer to this project as the Swissvale corridor project or the “Corridor”. The purpose of this project is to transform the community to a safe, clean, and sustainable community where our neighbors are proud to live, work, play and worship.
The objectives are:
- Promote sustainable development within the development boundaries delineated on the Park Triangle map.
- Preserve and enhance the landscape setting and character of Park Triangle
The project’s approach is two-fold.
- Community Development: Explore the revitalization of the Swissvale Ave corridor. Areas to include/add: affordable homes, churches, retail, small businesses, youth activities areas i.e. open space – parks – gardens – Senior housing, etc.
- Beautification: Preserve existing properties by supporting neighborhoods on side streets of the Corridor through smaller revitalization projects such as clean-up, planting, exterior facelifts, safety.
