Committees

The WCDC coordinates and facilitates several committees made up of Wilkinsburg residents, stakeholders, business owners, and experts. Engaging diverse constituencies in community planning and decision-making is important to our value of inclusiveness and to the quality of life of our residents. We invite you to learn more about committee work below and get involved today!

Strong Neighborhoods Committee

The goal of this committee is to build strong neighborhoods through an investigation of the causes and impacts of blight and vacancy in Wilkinsburg. Committee members will work with the WCDC to develop a Vacant Property Re-Use Plan to address vacancy and blight, mitigate threats of displacement and gentrification, and create catalysts for reinvestment driven by community vision. Merger Analysis Committee

In the face of stagnant blight, unsustainable tax rates, and impending municipal finance challenges, the Merger Analysis Committee was formed with the goal of investigating the civic, economic, and cultural impacts of Wilkinsburg consolidating with the City of Pittsburgh. Chaired by residents Derrick Tillman and Vanessa Buffry, the group is motivated by a hope of better services and lower property taxes that will increase affordable home ownership, expand school choice, and provide greater potential for businesses to thrive.  The core Merger Analysis Committee meets every other week and sub-committees focused on Communications, Services, and Diversity & Gentrification also meet regularly. Design Committee

This committee works to create a unified, vibrant business district by developing plans for physical improvements such as façade improvements, beautification projects, historic preservation, and planning & zoning recommendations. Current projects include providing technical assistance on façade improvements to update storefronts, coordinating designs for street furniture and other streetscape improvements, securing vacant buildings, and supporting public art installations. Learn more about the committee and it’s current programs by visiting the Design Committee Page HERE.

Economic Vitality Committee

This committee exists to build a knowledge base of what support is already available for small businesses, determine if there is a gap in support needed, and strategize around next steps for the development of the business support program.

Promotion Committee

This committee plans, coordinates, and promotes the WCDC’s annual events, including fundraisers and free community events. Past events have included Wilkinsburg House & Garden Tours, Two-Way Street Fest, Meet Me at the Station Gala, Wilkinsburg Food Tour, and the Vacant Home Tours. The Promotion Committee also supports the Good All Over Wilkinsburg branding campaign and other initiatives throughout the year. *This committee’s activities are currently on hold due to COVID restrictions and health and safety concerns.*
