A Legacy of Fresh Bread & Family: Wood Street Bread’s Next Chapter

Posted on March 18, 2025 by Marissa Luznar

For nearly 30 years, Wood Street Bread has been a staple in the Wilkinsburg community, filling the air with the unmistakable aroma of fresh, handmade bread. Founded by Bill Bartelme and his wife, Deanna, the bakery has built a reputation for quality, natural ingredients, and a commitment to craftsmanship. Now, as the founding generation prepares for retirement, the next chapter begins—one that keeps the family tradition alive with siblings Joe and Terry Sasko at the helm.

Terry has spent the last 12 years learning the craft from her stepfather, mastering every step of the baking process. “He taught me everything,” she says. “Not just about baking, but about hard work and resilience.” Joe, who recently moved back to Pittsburgh, has been handling operations, marketing, and helping modernize the brand while ensuring the heart of Wood Street Bread remains unchanged. “These recipes are loved by so many people,” Joe explains. “I couldn’t just let them disappear.”

Though change is inevitable, the core of Wood Street Bread will stay the same. Customers can continue to enjoy their favorite preservative-free loaves, just as they always have. However, the new generation is also looking ahead—updating branding, exploring menu additions, and enhancing the customer experience. “We’ll always be about making quality bread,” says Terry. “That will never change.”

Wilkinsburg’s support has been crucial to the bakery’s success, and the Saskos are dedicated to continuing that deep connection. “We’ve grown up with so many of our customers,” Terry shares. “Their stories, their memories—they’re part of this bakery just as much as we are.”

As a small, family-run business, Wood Street Bread embodies the resilience and strength of Wilkinsburg. Their succession story reflects a broader reality for many small businesses today—navigating transitions while keeping local traditions alive. The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation (WCDC) is proud to support small businesses like Wood Street Bread through programs that help local entrepreneurs grow and thrive.
